Maybe I should just talk to Escha directly and find out what's going on. I'm in a unique position here, since I know for sure it wasn't me. I might be able to get more out of her than someone else can.

That can vary person to person. Like, if someone disliked Yu, they might kill him. Or if they took the 'one team can win' motive to heart and knew Yu wasn't on their team, they might have done it. But hell, even killing for the 'one team can win' is a stupid idea, because people are keeping their teams quiet.
Right? Even if you believe in the condition presented, it's entirely too likely that you'll engage in friendly fire, or get outed at trial by a teammate who doesn't realize they're helping take out one of their own. Assuming, of course, that any of us here are playing along with the rules to that extent.

I understand that personal motives may come into play ... but from what little I saw of him, he seemed fairly inoffensive. Admittedly, it's not like I'm the best judge of what does or doesn't make people friends around here, but... still.

I mean... It can't be for certain ruled out, though he seems to have been among some of the smaller populations present. He was from... the temple, I believe? Guy and Majima have made no secret of being from the same.
