[despite the emotional toll the end of the trial had taken on all of them, Akira doesn't feel tired at all. sleeping some eight or so hours will do that to a guy, that's for sure. . . and his mind is too busy racing with all of the mistakes that they made that led to Asch's unfair conviction]

[he meanders through the mansionly on autopilot, feet carrying him without input from his brain. and that's how he finds himself outside, near the shed, a flash of familiar orange appearing in his vision]

[he stops. he blinks, gaze flickering up]

Chuuya?

What are you doing up there?

[being tall is GREAT, can confirm]

[an amused huff, and Akira approaches the shed, grabbing a hold of the low-hanging roof to pull himself up. he settles down next to Chuuya, legs dangling over the edge]

Just sitting? Or sitting and thinking?

[Akira's expression turns stony and unreadable, his gaze affixed at a random spot on the horizon. he doesn't answer immediately, and when he does, it's in a low, quiet voice]

Because he believed it was better for us to execute someone innocent who asked for it, rather than someone innocent who didn't.

[Akira doesn't like self-sacrifice either, but. . . he understands it]

So instead of having two innocent people die against their will, we only have one.

[. . . shakes his head]

I don't agree with his logic. I don't agree with him standing up there and saying it was okay for us to vote for him because he had died once already. I think he's an idiot and a moron.

But we can't deny that his choice did some good.

[however little good it might be]

It's extremely stupid.

[TRUST HIM. HE KNOWS]

[but also the mention of powers gets a curious look from Akira]

You could've, huh. . . how so?

[. . . an amused huff]

Aaaand that's probably why our abilities were taken from us.

[hmmm. . . he wonders. . .]

I don't know about that, actually.

[???]

Chuuya, have you considered what kind of place this mansion might be?

[Akira's mouth twitches, and he thinks that Chuuya could hardly be blamed for thinking this. it's the easiest, most logical conclusion, isn't it?]

[. . .]

[instead of responding directly, he asks a question, though the question almost sounds like he's repeating something someone else already said to him]

Chuuya, do you always believe everything you see and hear?"

[another huffed half-laugh]

Good question.

[how to best put this into words. . .]

Peach-san asked me that question when I asked her about the story told before Haruka-san's death. And when I told her I usually do, she told me to "look hard enough to find the answers I'm looking for."

I guess it might not sound like much, but when I take what she said and put it alongside what we've experienced-- the loss of our senses, of our limbs, the fact that we couldn't see the rats or the evidence of Haruka-san's death until the day of the trial-- it makes me wonder. . .

It makes me wonder if something about this mansion is affected by our perceptions of it.

[. . .]

I think we need to be careful about jumping to conclusions, though. I think we need to be more mindful about looking for things that escape our notice the first time around.

And I don't mean we should do that during trials, I mean— in general.

[tilts his head at Chuuya, expression thoughtful]

You say you think this place is a holding pen— a feeding ground— for monsters. But is there more to it that we're missing?

I think there is.

[smiles a little bit, expression rueful]

Yeah. I agree. Whatever force is causing people to turn into creatures and kill others, it can't change who they really are, deep down.

. . . so the question is, why are these transformations happening at all?

Mmm.

[he doesn't know about "force," but]

As nice as it sounds to get it all at once, I think this is a marathon, not a sprint.

We need to start getting smaller answers from the hosts firsts.
